This historical lighthouse is located on the shores of the 12th largest lake in the world, Lake Erie. An official lighthouse was commissioned in 1875 by the United States Department of the Interior. The lighthouse is the site of many historical events; the first shot of the War of 1812 was fired near the west bank of the lighthouse and it is the location of the burial grounds of the first soldier killed in the same war, a resident of Dunkirk. In World War II twelve Coast Guard personnel were assigned at the lighthouse to over look the waters of Lake Erie. Lake Erie’s first steamboat, Walk-on-Water, was lost in the storm of 1818. The 27 mile range of the light makes Dunkirk one of the most prominent places on Lake Erie.
